After nominations closed, the three candidates for Labour’s nomination for metromayor debated before Labour members in Wallasey tonight. Despite the huge effort being exerted to push Mayor Anderson onto a rather cynical electorate, he managed to win just TWO votes!! Now, as the saying goes, one swallow does not make a spring; but his lacklustre performance showed how limited he is for such a position.
Away from the glad-handing and murky trade-offs of the old school, people are increasingly aware that we need as metromayor, someone with the political nous and experience, together with the interpersonal skills, appropriate to such a high profile position. Do you remember the jibe at the over-ambitious American, Sarah Palin: “You can put lipstick on a pig but it remains a pig”? In short, they were saying, that all the spin and flannel in the world will not change a candidate. It will shine through if someone is not up to scratch.
